Project phase
Community review

Bataan & Churchill is the first of two phases of development on the west side of Albuquerque. In this first phase are 46 one- and two-bedroom apartment homes for seniors 55+ with amenity spaces, a large courtyard, a private dog park, and secure parking. This community will be close to transportation, shopping, and services for its new residents.

Bataan & Churchill will bring a beautiful housing community to a difficult to develop vacant lot. Since 1993, Sol Housing has been highly successful in bringing the benefits of high quality affordable and market-rate housing to Albuquerque's older, historic neighborhoods.

We work with local neighborhood associations and residents, listening to their input, acknowledging their needs, and actively engaging the real users, to create housing developments that truly reflect the needs and desires of the community. We need your feedback to ensure the project meets the community’s needs.
It is an established fact that a significant number of the older population are housing cost-burdened and losing housing stability. The increase in housing costs and the current inflationary environment put pressure on those with lower and fixed incomes, which include the city's aging population. The first phase of this development will provide 46 new units of housing that are affordable for seniors 55 and older with low and moderate incomes, with the potential to add 46 additional family units in the future.
Sol Housing provides enrichment services to the residents of our affordable housing apartment communities to support them in maintaining their independence and housing stability. Services include workshops, classes, and events focused on finances, technology, health and wellness, fitness, assistance with Medicaid/Medicare, and various social events.
Bataan & Churchill includes amenities to support social interaction and an active lifestyle. A large community room serves as a place where our residents can meet informally or for community events and parties. Connected to the community room is a large, south-facing courtyard with fruit trees, benches, and shade structures where they can enjoy the garden and each other's company. The fitness room and bike storage room promote physical activity while the private dog park encourages activity and socialization for residents with pets or service animals.
Bataan & Churchill is within short walking or bicycling distance of public transit and basic services such as grocery shopping, banking, pharmacy, restaurants, and places of worship. The Coors Station ART stop is 0.1 miles from the site, providing free transportation to other areas of the city. The site will include accessible sidewalks to encourage use and engagement with nearby services and businesses. Bike storage within the building encourages multi-modal transportation to these businesses.
A planned mural painted onto the main entry will be installed by a local artist solicited during construction by a selection committee that includes the Alamosa Neighborhood Association, community leaders, and others with an interest in the art and artist selected that will best connect neighbors with a sense of pride for their heritage and the place that is the Southwest Mesa. Shown above is a mural painted by local artist, Molly Mendenhall, at Sol Housing's Luminaria Senior Community.
The project overall, including apartments, and all residential amenity areas on the site, incorporates Universal Design Principles to provide equitable use among all residents and provide greater adaptability for residents to sustain their housing even as they age and/or if their mobility changes. Apartment features include wider 3-foot doorways, ample clear floor space, taller toilets in bathrooms, removable cabinets with clear worksurfaces in the kitchen, and front-loading washers and dryers in all units. The building is designed with accessible routes throughout the site and built-in ease of access features, push-button door operators, and well-placed seating throughout.
Bataan & Churchill will be designed to attain a high level of energy efficiency while implementing green and sustainable building measures in the construction and operation of the project. The project design will incorporate energy-efficient lighting and heating/cooling equipment, a highly insulated building envelope (roof, walls, and windows), water-saving fixtures, low water use irrigation, and drought-tolerant plantings. Our newest communities are ENERGY STAR® certified buildings and all of our properties include ENERGY STAR® appliances and lighting.
Sol Housing is an expert at transforming vacant city lots into beautiful housing developments that fit into the context of the neighborhood. Bataan & Churchill will exemplify this commitment by creating the building in a traditional southwestern style utilizing Pueblo and Mexican architecture. Landscaping and sidewalk improvements will beautify the streetscape and the entry mural will reflect local values and tradition.
Bataan & Churchill will have a deep economic impact, contributing over $15M to the metro economy through its construction, operation, and resident spending. Moreover, the project will support approximately 40 construction jobs and many more when you factor in maintenance, operations, and the jobs supported by resident spending in the area.
